Discover Albania

A land that time forgot

Before you lace up your boots, here's why Albania is unlike anywhere else in Europe.

I

An ancient land

Albania is one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited territories. The Illyrians β€” ancestors of modern Albanians β€” settled these mountains over 4,000 years ago. Centuries of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule have left their mark, yet Albania's mountain culture remained fiercely independent throughout. The highlands you hike through today were never fully conquered by any empire.

II

Isolated for decades

From 1944 to 1991, Albania was the most isolated country in Europe under communist dictator Enver Hoxha. The borders were sealed, tourism was forbidden, and the outside world was kept out entirely. Over 170,000 concrete bunkers β€” still visible across the landscape today β€” were built in paranoid preparation for an invasion that never came. This isolation is precisely why so much of Albania remains untouched.

III

The Accursed Mountains

The Albanian Alps β€” known locally as the BjeshkΓ«t e Namuna, or "Accursed Mountains" β€” earned their name from the brutal winters that once claimed the lives of travellers caught unprepared. Rising to 2,694m at Jezerca Peak, these mountains form one of the last true wildernesses in Europe. No ski resorts. No cable cars. No crowds. Just raw, dramatic alpine landscape shared with eagles, wolves and the occasional shepherd.

IV

Why now

Albania only opened to mass tourism in the early 2000s, and the mountain regions remained largely undiscovered until the mid-2010s. The trails are there. The guesthouses are there. The hospitality is extraordinary. But the crowds haven't arrived yet. If you've ever wanted to hike somewhere that feels genuinely undiscovered β€” this is your window. In ten years, everyone will know about Valbona and Theth. Right now, it's still yours to explore.
